MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION

We’ve all heard the argument that a great singer is a great singer and anyone with ears should be able to “hear through” any recording no matter how rough. To my way of thinking, this is the music industry equivalent of being set up on a blind date with a person who may very well have a heart of gold but who doesn’t bother to shower. In other words, you’ve only got one chance to make a first impression with your song and given the competition out there, it had better be a great one. You might even meet a music industry person who can genuinely hear through a rough recording. This may be true for that one individual, but if you’re planning on showing your song to a variety of artists, managers, producers and A&R reps as well, it’s never safe to assume that anything less than a first-rate recording will do. By “first rate” I don’t mean full-band or elaborately produced, I simply mean your album should be recorded and produced by professionals.

BE READY TO LAY DOWN THOSE HITS!!

What do you need to do to get ready for your big day in a recording studio? The first step is rehearsal. If you have a place to rehearse, like your garage or basement go for it. If not, you may need to seek out a professional rehearsal studio. If your budget allows, I highly suggest the latter. Trust me, you will get way more done! Make sure you have properly rehearsed all of the songs you plan on recording. This means that the band knows the songs inside and out and can play all of theText Colorm with or without the lead vocals. If you're just a voalist with no band, then you should know all of your songs down to the "T". You should practice all the songs to some sort of "click track" or metronome. This will ensure the song has a steady flow and doesn't rollercoaster tempo wise. Make sure to jot down what the tempo for each song will be, so that you can let the engineer in the studio know. All vocal harmonies should be worked out, all solos tweaked to perfection, and any bridges or musical changes should be completely ironed out. Don't wait to do this in the recording studio as you will be wasting valuable studio time at your expense!
